Reset the Old World Way

About

Guilford Bathhouse is a modern European-style bathhouse coming to the Connecticut shoreline. Inspired by traditional banya and hydrothermal wellness rituals, we are creating a place where people can slow down, reconnect, and restore their body and mind. Our experience is built around a simple but powerful rhythm: Heat, Cool, Rest, Repeat. Guests will move between sauna, steam, cold plunge, warm hydrotherapy, and relaxation spaces designed to support stress relief, recovery, and everyday wellness.Guilford is our home, and this project is rooted in our love for the community, the shoreline, and the quality of life that makes this town so special. We wanted to create something meaningful here: a welcoming wellness destination where locals, nearby professionals, families, and visitors can relax, recharge, and feel connected.Guilford Bathhouse is more than a spa. It is a social wellness destination where tradition meets modern comfort. Whether you come alone for quiet recovery, with a friend to unwind, or as part of a private wellness event, our goal is to make each visit feel grounding, restorative, and memorable.Heat. Cool. Rest. Slow your pace. Guilford Bathhouse is your reset place.

Bathhouse Guide

The bathhouse experience is simple and intuitive. Listen to your body, move slowly, rest often, and do what feels good.

❦ Arrive Comfortably. Try not to arrive hungry or overly full. A light meal before your visit is best. A nourishing meal afterward can help you feel restored and energized.
≋ Start with a Shower. Before entering the sauna or steam room, take a quick shower. This helps rinse away the day, prepares your skin, and sets the tone for the experience. We recommend keeping your hair dry when possible, as dry hair can make it easier to regulate body temperature.
◍ Dry Off Well. After showering, dry off before entering the heat. Dry skin begins to sweat faster, which helps your body adjust. A traditional bathhouse hat may also be worn to help protect your head from overheating and make high temperatures feel more comfortable.
△ Begin Gently. Your first sauna or steam session should be short and gentle. Start on a lower or middle bench and stay only as long as you feel comfortable. Beginners should usually limit the first session to about 5 to 10 minutes.
◒ Adjust Slowly. As you become more comfortable, you may choose a higher bench, where the heat is stronger. If you lie down during your session, sit upright for the last couple of minutes before standing. This helps your circulation adjust and may reduce lightheadedness.
❄ Cool Down. After heat, cool your body gradually with a shower, cold plunge, or pool. The cold phase should feel refreshing, not forced. Cold plunging creates stress on the body. Guests with high blood pressure, heart conditions, circulatory issues, or other medical concerns should avoid cold plunging or consult a healthcare provider before participating. Temperature contrast is one of the signature parts of the bathhouse ritual. Moving between heat and cold can leave you feeling awake, refreshed, and deeply relaxed.
♨ Rest and Hydrate. Rest is an essential part of the experience. After heat and cold, your body needs time to recover. Take deep breaths, relax, and allow your temperature and heart rate to return to normal. There is no rush to return to the sauna or steam room. Drink water, tea, or juice between rounds to help restore fluids and minerals.
↻ Repeat If Desired. Repeat the heat, cool, and rest cycle only if it feels right. For most guests, two or three rounds are enough. The first round helps the body warm up, while later rounds may feel deeper and more restorative.
✾ Venik Treatment. A traditional venik treatment can be added for a fuller bathhouse experience. This rejuvenating ritual uses leafy branches to gently stimulate the skin, support circulation, and create a deeply relaxing experience.

Shower. Dry off. Heat. Cool. Rest. Hydrate. Repeat if desired. Most importantly, go at your own pace. The bathhouse is not about endurance. It is about slowing down, reconnecting with your body, and leaving feeling restored.
